Koons Goes From Yacht Decorator to Collection Curator

Published: September 25, 2009

Dakis Joannou already has a yacht decorated by Jeff Koons, but now, thanks to the artist, the Greek industrialist's artwork will be getting a high-profile showcase. Koons has agreed to curate an exhibit of Joannou’s collection at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in February 2010.

Joannou began collecting contemporary art in the early 1980s and was one of the first collectors to purchase Koons’s Equilibrium Tanks. Since then, he has added a number of the artist’s works to his collection alongside pieces by Maurizio Cattelan, Urs Fischer, Robert Gober, and Charles Ray.

The Koons-curated exhibition will be part of a series of shows at the New Museum titled “The Imaginary Museum,” which will showcase private collections that are rarely displayed publicly. Joannou currently shows his work in Athens through his Deste Foundation.
