"Working in Japan has been critical to the development of my work around the world,” said Hadid in a statement. “I will always be grateful for this support early in my career.” The Praemium Imperiale awards, which were established in 1988 and come with a prize of about $163,000 each, are given for lifetime arts achievement in categories not covered by the Nobel Prizes. Other winners this year are photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, sculptor Richard Long, and pianist Alfred Brendel. Past architecture laureates include Norman Foster, I.M. Pei, and Frank Gehry.
