NEW YORK—Provenance is key in this month’s photography sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York. Christie’s is offering two major collections: the third and final sale of the renowned Bruce and Nancy Berman holdings of color photographs and a wide range of works from the esteemed Miller-Plummer collection. The Berman photos go under the hammer on October 7. Look for rare-to-auction photographers such as William Christenberry and Joel Sternfeld. Hitting the block at the house on the same day is a single-owner sale of prints by Sally Mann. On October 8 is the Miller-Plummer session, headlined by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugène Atget and Dorothea Lange. Sotheby’s takes over on the 9th with a strong various-owners auction anchored by the photographic pioneers Paul Outerbridge and Harry Callahan. Following is a small taste of this fall’s photo feast. "From Good Stock" originally appeared in the October 2009 issue of Art+Auction. For a complete list of articles from this issue available on ARTINFO, see Art+Auction's October 2009 Table of Contents.
