NEW YORK—With a sale and several upcoming shows, Sally Mann is returning to the spotlight. The Christie’s sale on October 7 features 75 lots from a private Washington, D.C., collection, most of which are from sold-out editions. Among them are 59 portraits of her husband, Larry Mann, and children, from her celebrated early series "Immediate Family," which includes Emmett, Jessie and Virginia, 1989, estimated to fetch between $10,000 and $15,000.

Through October 31 at its Madison Avenue outpost, Gagosian Gallery is displaying Mann’s latest series, "Proud Flesh," consisting of nude studies of her husband taken over six years. Accompanying the show is a catalogue (Aperture/Gagosian) with an introduction by the poet and author C. D. Wright. Mann’s Hephaestus graces the cover. A traveling solo exhibition, "The Family and the Land," is at the Hague Museum of Photography, through January 10, 2010, while the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is slated to reopen its renovated building next May with an exhibition of the native Virginian’s work

"Family of Mann" originally appeared in the October 2009 issue of Art+Auction. For a complete list of articles from this issue available on ARTINFO, see Art+Auction's October 2009 Table of Contents.
