London Exhibit Marks Polaroid’s Passing

Published: September 29, 2009
LONDON—Next month, when the last Polaroid cartridges pass their use-by date, London’s Atlas Gallery will mark the instant format’s passing with an exhibition of work by some of the finest photographers who used the film.

Running Oct. 9 to Nov. 28, “Polaroid: Exp 09.10.09” will feature artists ranging from the Hungarian-born fashion photographer and photojournalist André Kertész to the provocative Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, as well as a number of contemporary British artists, including Marc Quinn, who was commissioned to do work especially for the show. Also on view will be pictures by Andy Warhol, who shot Polaroids as preparatory sketches for his paintings of such subjects as Bianca Jagger and Muhammad Ali. All the images at Atlas will be for sale.
