Artists Depict Khamovnichesky Trial for Contest

Published: September 30, 2009
MOSCOW—The trial of Russian businessmen Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev on charges of fraud has become a popular subject for the nation’s artists, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports. Numerous artists have been visiting the courtroom and have created works that are now part of a contest held at the Central House of Arts in Moscow.

Organizers will award prizes in four categories: painting, sketching, caricature, and comic illustration. In addition, online voters will be able to choose one winner. All five artists will receive a free trip to New York in honor of their work.

Some observers have argued that the two defendants were charged with fraud because of the threat that they posted to the political ambitions of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Both defendants are currently serving time in prison, stemming from earlier convictions on tax evasion charges.
