“American Gothic” Sculpture Is a Hit in Chicago

Published: October 1, 2009
Grant Wood’s American Gothic (1930) painting has been referenced in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and featured on The Simpsons, and now a 25-foot-tall sculptural version of the work has become a popular tourist attraction in Chicago.

J. Seward Johnson Jr.’s version of the classic work, titled God Bless America (2008), now sits in Pioneer Plaza along Michigan Avenue, just north of the Chicago River, where it was installed last December. The sculpture joins a rich tradition of public art in the city, which also includes a Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate.

The actual painting is at the Art Institute of Chicago, whose employees declined to comment on the appropriation, citing a policy of only discussing works in the museum’s collection.
