Indonesian Artist Turns Anti-Porn Laws Into Art

SINGAPORE—Four years ago, Indonesian artist Agus Suwage was pulled into parliament and informed by lawmakers that his art was not art at all, but rather pornography. Nowadays, Suwage feels that restrictions have become even stronger in his native land, and that conservatism is only growing.

So in his latest exhibition, which opened in September at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Suwage has turned the tables and used the very laws that restrict his work to inform it: The series shows silhouettes of female nudes overlaid with the actual text of anti-pornography laws passed in 2008. Said Suwage of the laws, “There are more important things to address in law than pornography, like education."
