Guy Regal/Newell, New York
Cork and twig armchair
Antiques dealer
Guy Regal and
Lewis J. Baer, of Newel, one of New York’s oldest suppliers of period props, have teamed up to launch
Guy Regal/Newel. Located in Regal’s townhouse at 223 East 60th Street in Manhattan, the gallery features three floors of antique and modern furnishings carefully arranged by Regal. The joint venture gives him access to Newell’s thousands of objects, dating from the Renaissance to the 20th century and long housed in a six-story, 37,800-square-foot warehouse on 53rd Street. In exchange, Baer benefits from his new partner’s gallery know-how and curatorial flair. "The warehouse is stacked with furniture from floor to ceiling; it’s a headache for decorators and collectors," says Baer. The shop opens October 14 with the first in what will be a series of annual exhibitions, "Neoclassicism: Discoveries for the 17th through 20th Centuries," in which Regal plans to mix and match old and new to underscore the modernity of such gems as a cork and twig armchair. The display represents "a fresher, younger approach," says Regal.
