Pebble Beach Art Thieves Demanded Ransom

Published: October 2, 2009
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.—The collectors who had several million dollars worth of art stolen from their rented Pebble Beach home also found a ransom note, investigators have now revealed. Thirteen major pieces were stolen from the house — including work by Jackson Pollock, Matisse, Rembrandt and Miro — as well as a computer containing business files and $3,100 in cash. Though the burglary victims, A. Benjamin Amadio and Ralph Kennaugh, have a business that involves buying and selling art, all of the artwork came from their personal collections.

The art was stolen sometime in the afternoon or evening of Sept. 25. The ransom note demanded money and also threatened the lives of the two men’s families. They have offered a $1 million reward for the return of the unharmed artwork, and a $5 million reward for its return in conjunction with information leading to an arrest.
