MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—Top lot: A Chippendale-style carved bird’s-eye and tiger maple desk brought $21,330, surprising not only because the price was triple the high estimate but also because the piece was made in 1994. This seeming overperformance is explained by the craftsmanship, evident in the lattice and fanned details.
