Dallas Arts-District Development Put on Hold

DALLAS— It’s starting to look as though Dallas’s new AT&T Performing Arts Center, which is preparing to open Oct. 12, will be holding down the neighborhood by itself for a while.

Though there’s much interest in developing the city's Arts District, especially with the new center, there is no budget to do so. Given the weak economy, many projects have been put on hold, including a large complex in Arts Plaza that will include office space and loft-style apartments, and a residential building, called Museum Tower, that already has potential tenants. With virtually no funding available, Arts District developers have had to delay their building plans. Still, most of them, like Arts District Executive Director Veletta Forsythe Lill, believe it is only a matter of time before economic conditions improve and builders  start breaking ground.
