Tourists Invited to Watch a Caravaggio Restoration

Published: October 8, 2009
ROME—Caravaggio’s 1609 masterpiece, The Adoration of the Magi, already has a special, temporary home, having been moved last month from the city of its creation — Messina, Sicily — to the lower chamber of the Italian parliament in Rome, but now it is going to be having some special visitors.

As preservationists work to restore the painting in the chamber, small groups of visitors will be able to watch the process unfold. According to Valeri Merlini, a restorer who is involved in the project, the decision was made to attempt to get visitors more interested in the famous work of art.

After the restoration is completed, Caravaggio’s work will travel from the legislature to the executive branch of government, going on display in February 2010 at the Quirinale presidential palace as part of an exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of the Italian master’s death.
