Bridget Riley Awarded Goslar Kaiser Ring

Published: October 8, 2009
GOSLAR, Germany—Bridget Riley, the British artist well known for her colorful, methodical op art, has been awarded the prestigious Goslar Kaiser Ring prize for 2009.

“For nearly 50 years the works of Bridget Riley have been among the most impressive contributions to European painting," the jury remarked, citing her achievements in using "stringency and color as vehicles to perception of nature and the world."

Presented annually by the small central German town of Goslar, the Kaiser Ring was established in 1975 to honor influential contemporary artists as a way of bridging the city's historical artistic achievements and the present.

Recent recipients include Andreas Gursky (2008), Matthew Barney (2007), and Jörg Immendorff (2006).
