Towering Gazprom Tower Approved for St. Petersburg

Published: October 9, 2009
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—Final approval has come through from the governor of St. Petersburg for the building of Russia’s proposed Gazprom Tower, a 77-story structure that will serve as the headquarters of the country’s biggest power company.

Some have declared it an “architectural masterpiece,” but not everyone is thrilled about it. Some cultural authorities fear the city is at risk of losing that status when the tower is built; one architectural preservation society even called the structure “monstrous.” What is not in question is how it will appear in the city. The building will surely stand out against St. Petersberg’s low, historic skyline, which is currently a U.N. World Heritage Site.
