Chicago’s Spire Will Get Built, Architect Says
Published: October 12, 2009
CHICAGO—
Construction plans for Chicago’s infamous Spire are not dead, says architect Santiago Calatrava, but simply halted due to the economy. A tower of condos that will reach 2,000 feet into the sky along Chicago’s waterfront, the Spire will be the country's tallest building upon its completion. Right now, however, it’s no more than a large hole along Lake Shore Drive.
Calatrava says there's still hope for the structure, whose construction stopped last year. He reminds skeptics that it has only been four years since the project's announcement and that he has seen other projects take up to 13 years to complete. He also hinted that the Spire will only go up in Chicago, as it has been designed for the city and will not be relocated to another site. Read more at the Chicago Tribune. |
