The Islip Art Museum may be closed to help alleviate the town's $10 million budget deficit.

ISLIP, New York—The two full-time employees of the Islip Art Museum, including director Mary Lou Cohalan, are on the chopping block when the Long Island town does city-wide layoffs on Nov. 6. Two part-time employees will also lose their places at the museum, but will be transferred elsewhere in town as Islip looks for ways to rectify a $10 million budget gap.

The actual museum, however, though clearly in danger, may have some possibilities looming on the horizon. On Monday, city officials met with representatives from Dowling College, who expressed an interest in taking over the museum in the event that it could be run through the university’s Anthony Giordano Gallery, which shows contemporary art. The college noted that they are a non-for-profit organization, meaning they are not bringing any money to the table. But town supervisor Phil Nolan had no problem with that, saying, “We are very excited to have an academic organization looking to take over the museum.” Nothing, of course, is official yet.
