Arizona Museum Scuttles Annual Indian Art Fair

Published: October 13, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz.—As a result of recent state budget cuts, the 2010 Southwest Indian Art Fair has been canceled, according to the Arizona State Museum, which has organized the event for the past 16 years.

The annual event typically draws about 6,000 visitors to view and purchase work made by more than 200 Indian artists from around the region. It is the second major public program to be canceled in the wake of decreased funding from the state, which contributes about one-third of the total operating costs. The museum’s summer solstice celebration was slashed in June.

“As much as we have tried in the last two years to save as many jobs as we could, this new round of cuts forces us to eliminate staff positions,” museum director Beth Grindell said. “There’s simply nothing left to trim.” Museum officials said they hope the fair will return in the future, when the economic climate has improved.
