Still, the curator and artists involved say that while they knew the show, called “The Age of Marvellous,” would be viewed as provocative, it was not their intention to simply shock. Rather, they say that they hoped to promote thinking and inspire people to learn more about why they are seeing what they are seeing. Curator Joe La Placa used the ape sculpture, by Paul Fryer, as an example, explaining that he and the artist hoped the piece would make people wonder why the world’s primates are disappearing. “An exhibition that is just shock horror leaves you empty, said La Placa, “but great art grabs you and makes you think deeper.” |
