Oliver Beer Wins New Sensations Prize

Published: October 14, 2009
LONDON—Oliver Beer has been announced as the winner of 2009’s New Sensations prize, an honor awarded to a recent graduate of a British arts college. The competition is sponsored by London’s Channel 4 and the Saatchi Gallery, and was judged by artist Gavin Turk, critic Louisa Buck, Alison Jacques of the Alison Jacques Gallery, and Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery.

Launched in 2007 as a way to promote new artists, the New Sensations program has helped recent graduates to sell their work and gain exhibition experience. Twenty artists were shortlisted for the prize, and their work will be on view at the Rochelle School in Shoreditch through Oct. 19. A second prize is also integrated into the competition: Clothing company Moncler, a sponsor of New Sensations, will choose one of the 20 finalists to create a work inspired by its corporate logo — a duck — to be sold in support of a children’s charity.
