ROANOKE, Va.—The Taubman Museum of Art has been honored with a 2009 International Architecture Award on the eve of its first anniversary, which it will celebrate in November. Designed by Los Angeles architect Randall Stout, the structure was chosen from a pool of 97 international finalists, 13 of which were located in America.

The award, presented by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, honors both built and unbuilt projects, though qualifying applicants had to have been designed by Jan. 1, 2006. This is the second time the Taubman has been honored by the Chicago Athenaeum: In 2007, it received an American Architecture Award.
