Victim of Warhol Portrait Theft Cancels Insurance Claim

Published: October 16, 2009
LOS ANGELES—Mysteries continue to abound in the theft of a series of Warhol portraits. After initially setting a $1 million reward for the return of the works from Andy Warhol’s “Athletes” series, Seattle-based collector Richard Weisman has canceled his $25 million insurance claim.

Weisman has not commented publicly on the unusual move, but told the Seattle Times in a recent interview, “[Insurance investigators] turn you into a suspect. I just finally told them, ‘I’m not going to go through it for three to five years. Forget it’.”

Detective Don Hrycyk of the Los Angeles Police Department stated that the investigation of the theft continues, though he noted that Weisman has not returned recent phone calls regarding the search for the missing works.
