Murakami's Geisai Fair Moves from Miami to Taiwan

Published: October 16, 2009
TAIPEI, Taiwan— Takashi Murakami's Geisai fair has been a launching pad for emerging artists since its 2002 Tokyo debut. The Japanese mega-star expanded to the United States in 2007, planning it a biannual event to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, though that plan has been shelved for this year.

Instead of Miami Beach, the December incarnation of the fair is scheduled to take place in Taipei, Taiwan. This section of the fair with will boast more than 200 exhibitor booths, which will make it considerably larger than previous incarnations of its Miami counterpart.

A spokeswoman for Kaikai Kiki, Murakami’s company, touted the international focus of the fair, “We would not say that Geisai Miami has been canceled, but rather that we are simply building on our desire to expand the Geisai event/concept worldwide.” The spokeswoman also noted that Geisai has been growing steadily in Japan since its creation.
