Rothko Returns to Russia

Published: October 16, 2009
MOSCOW—The new owner of the Rothko paintings sold by disgraced financer J. Ezra Merkin earlier this year for $310 remains unknown, but the location of the paintings' first exhibition has been revealed to be the artist’s nation of birth: Russia.

The Garage Center for Contemporary Art, the palatial exhibition space founded by Dasha Zhukova and reportedly financed by her boyfriend, art collector Roman Abramovich, announced yesterday that it will show the paintings in a show opening in Spring 2010.

The planned show will be Rothko’s first solo exhibition in Russia’s capital city, as well as the first to take place in the Garage’s new gallery space, designed by Canadian architect Jamie Fobert.
