FIAC Lures Iconic (and Expensive) Works to Paris

Published: October 20, 2009
PARIS—The appearance of a $9 million Francis Bacon made headlines at the Frieze Art Fair. Now organizers of the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain (FIAC) have announced that visitors should expect to see works by Bacon and Warhol that could be worth four times as much.

Hoping to attract higher-end galleries and a wealthier crowd, the organizers have created a section called “The Modern Project,” which includes large, ornate booths to galleries willing to bring museum-quality pieces to the fair. Perhaps the best part of the deal is that FIAC administrators have found sponsors to subsidize the booths, which will go for one-tenth of their typical costs.

The 10 galleries that have signed up to fill the booths are Gagosian, PaceWildenstein, Acquavella, L&M Arts, Richard Gray, Thomas Ammann, Beyeler, Louis Carre, Jan Krugier, and Malingue. Some of the works they plan to offer include a 1963 Andy Warhol “Disaster” painting and Bacon’s Portrait of George Dyer Talking, priced around $40 million.
