Tate May Trash "Pop Life" Exhibition Catalogs
Published: October 20, 2009
The exhibition came under scrutiny on the eve of its October 1 opening when London's Metropolitan Police’s Obscene Publications Unit removed Richard Prince’s 1983 photograph Spiritual America from the museum. Prince's artwork shows a 10-year-old Brooke Shields standing in a bath tub wearing nothing but heavy make-up. The photograph has periodically been the subject of controversy for its depiction a naked child. The exhibition catalogs for “Pop Life,” contain an image of Spiritual America, and have been for sale with a warning sticker with legal advice placed over the nude image of Shields. Now the museum is considering dumping the remaining catalogs, which, if they had sold at full value, would have brought in almost £320,000 ($525,000). |
