SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento has received a gift of almost 400 works of California abstract expressionist art.

The mid-century movement, which is generally overshadowed by its East Coast counterpart, focused on experimentation and the exchange of ideas, relying more on the West Coast landscape and on portraying inner realities than on the action central to the New York artists.

The collection, donated by George and LaVona Blair, includes works by nearly 60 artists, including Ernest Briggs, Edward Dugmore, and Lawrence Calcagno. The Crocker will present a broad survey of California art when the museum opens an expanded facility next fall.
