Coping with Financial Problems, Peter Howson Sells Paintings at Auction
Published: October 22, 2009
Despite being collected by Madonna, David Bowie, and Jack Nicholson, Howson has stated that he is prone to “bad decision-making and not being very good with money” and felt that this risky maneuver, which some artists would worry could depress the value of their work, was the best way to correct his financial situation. Howson paintings have gone for as much as £300,000 ($497,000) at auction, but the works at McTear's were sold without reserves, and bidding topped out at £4,995 ($8,280), with most works going for less than £1,000 ($1,660). Howson says that he believes his Asperger's syndrome, a form of autistic spectrum disorder that impairs one’s ability to understand and judge the feelings and motivations of others, has contributed to his difficulties. He has stated that he had been “overgenerous” to people seeking money in the past and had also struggled with a shopping addiction. Despite the sell-off, Howson states that he will still own hundreds of works and believes that he should be well-positioned financially after the sale. |
