Matthew Marks Going West

Published: October 23, 2009
NEW YORK—The art market might not have fully recovered from the culture shock of last year's market crash, but some galleries are striding ahead with plans for expansion anyway. Earlier this week, the New York Times revealed some details of Sperone Westwater's flashy new Norman Foster–designed tower on the Bowery, set to open in 2010, and now the paper has reported that New York's Matthew Marks gallery will open a space in Los Angeles in about a year.

The dealer, who has three spaces in Chelsea — two on West 22nd Street and one on West 24th — has had a West Coast presence since staffer Sabrina Buell relocated to San Francisco and became West Coast director several years ago. Marks told the Times, “It’s surprising that the majority of my artists, especially the European ones, have not shown on the West Coast.” Among the gallery's roster of artists are Thomas Demand, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Andreas Gursky, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, and Tony Smith. The new space will be in West Hollywood on North Orange Grove Avenue and is set to open in about a year.
