A Man of Many Stripes

By Carnelia Garcia

Published: November 1, 2009
NEW YORK—Sean Scully first made waves in the early 1970s by turning to painterly geometric abstraction at a time when Conceptualism, Minimalism and Op art were more in vogue. Today his trademark stripes and rectangles, deep-hued and lushly painted, are instantly recognizable. Some 10 recent pictures, including Landbar, 2009, are on view at Galerie Lelong in New York through December 12, while a retrospective of his work relaunches the Ulster Museum, in Belfast, Ireland, after its £17 million ($27 million) renovation, remaining there through February 14. Included is his "Wall of Light" series, 2006, in which he captured in abstract form the play of sun and shade
