NEW YORK—
Sean Scully first made waves in the early 1970s by turning to painterly geometric abstraction at a
time when Conceptualism, Minimalism and Op art were more in vogue. Today his trademark stripes and
rectangles, deep-hued and lushly painted, are instantly recognizable. Some 10 recent pictures,
including
Landbar, 2009, are on view at
Galerie Lelong in New York through December 12, while a
retrospective of his work relaunches the
Ulster Museum, in Belfast, Ireland, after its £17
million ($27 million) renovation, remaining there through February 14. Included is his "Wall of
Light" series, 2006, in which he captured in abstract form the play of sun and
shade
