DETROIT—To draw attention to the foreclosures that have devastated Detroit, two artists literally plan to freeze a house in the area. Gregory Holm and Matthew Radune have announced that they plan to gradually coat a building in ice this winter before demolishing it this spring.

“I've been really fascinated by the whole mythology of Detroit and the structures and what they represent,” Holm, who was born there, told reporters. Today, tens of thousands of buildings sit vacant in Motor City as a result of a steep population decline from 1.8 million in the 1950s to just half that today.

The two freezers estimate that they will need about $11,000 to complete the project. They say that they have begun to raise money online and plan to pick out a building to freeze shortly. They say when it thaws in the spring, they will demolish it and donate the land, perhaps to start a community garden.
