Pollock Copyright Group Distances Itself

Published: May 16, 2005
NEW YORK - The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, which controls the copyright to images of paintings by Jackson Pollock, has withdrawn permission for the use of its name by the Mark Borghi Fine Arts Gallery, according to the New York Times.

The Manhattan gallery will be holding a show of 32 recently discovered paintings thought to be by Pollock.

According to Randy Kennedy of The New York Times, "A lawyer for the foundation said that the Artists Rights Society, a copyright agency, had granted permission for the name to be used but that the foundation had not been aware of the decision. Charles C. Bergman, chairman and chief executive of the foundation, said that the decision meant only that the group, no longer involved in authenticating Pollock works, did not want to be involved in judging or lending its weight to the works."

Kennedy continues, "Mr. Borghi, the gallery's owner, said that as far as he was concerned the works have already been authenticated by Ellen G. Landau, one of the world's most respected Pollock scholars, who is helping to organize the new exhibition."
