New MoMA Tower Wins Approval

Published: October 29, 2009
NEW YORK—The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) may be celebrating its 80th birthday this year, but it is still growing. The New York City Council yesterday approved the museum’s proposal to build an 82-story tower on its midtown block. The council’s consent means that construction on the 1,000-foot-tall project, designed by famed architect Jean Nouvel, can proceed.

The museum says the proposed addition will add about 40,000 square feet of gallery space, a 30 percent increase over its current size. None of that new space will be located high up in the tower, though. The choicest views will be reserved for 150 planned residential apartments and 100 hotel rooms.

MoMA's plan has generated controversy among some who felt that the tower could have negatively affected New York's iconic skyline. Earlier this year the New York City Planning Commission voted to cut the height of the building by 200 feet.
