World’s Largest Mona Lisa Unveiled

Published: October 29, 2009
WREXHAM, England—Even enlarged 50 times, the Mona Lisa’s smile “is still as enigmatic as ever,” according to Katy Webster, an English artist who has overseen of the world’s largest reproduction of the famed Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece at a local shopping center.

The incredible enlargement, the brainchild of shopping center manager Kevin Critchley, stretches 57.4 feet in diameter and required 245 helpers and 23 gallons of paint to produce. Volunteers including local schoolchildren and artists spent a total of 987 man-hours on the project.

Why undertake such labors? Organizers say they plan to sell pieces of the work, which will be given to Hope House Children’s Hospice, which provides aid to terminally ill children and their families. Buyers will have to wait to take possession of their purchases, though. The mall plans to keep the piece installed for the next two years.
