DENVER—The Clyfford Still Museum has announced it is going forward with building plans and intends to break ground on Dec. 14, after a nine-month pause to raise additional money for the $29 million project. The building’s proposed size has shrunk from 31,500 square feet to 30,000, cutting its cost from $33 million to $29 million, but the design remains largely unchanged otherwise.

Museum officials say they decided to delay breaking ground in order to ensure that they had the necessary construction funds to complete the project. They say they have now raised $25 million toward that $29 million goal — about 85 percent of the total cost of the project. Officials say they have also secured a $5 million operating endowment.

The museum will be solely devoted to the late Abstract Expressionist and will show 2,400 pieces of his work, which amounts to about 94 percent of his output over his entire career. His widow, Patricia Still, agreed to donate the works to Denver in 2004. If all goes according to plan, the museum should open to the public in the middle of 2011, just one year late.
