SYDNEY—Australian curator Nick Waterlow and his daughter, cookbook writer Chloe Waterlow, have been found dead, according to Australia’s Daily Telegraph. Police believe that the pair were murdered and are searching for the Nick Waterlow’s son, Anthony, who is known to be mentally ill and whom they believe may have been behind the stabbing. An unidentified two-year-old girl was also found with multiple stab wounds and is in serious condition at a local hospital.

Waterlow has served as the director of the Sydney Biennale on three separate occasions — in 1979, 1986, and 1998 — and served on the selection committee in 2000. He had recently been working at director of the Ivan Dougherty Gallery at the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales in Paddington.

Members of the Australian art world mourned the loss of a long-time art world legend. “At least two generations of gallery owners and arts administrators scattered around Australia can really thank Nick Waterlow for their careers,” Sydney gallery owner Damien Minton said.

Waterlow had been a widely respected member of the arts community in Australia and had been named a member of the Order of Australia. National Association for the Visual Arts executive director Tamara Winikoff also spoke of the kind, enduring influence Waterlow had on the field. "Nick is one of the most admired and loved senior figures in the arts," she said. “I can't imagine why anyone could possibly want to harm him.”
