One Sweet Pajama Party

By Marina Cashdan

Published: November 19, 2009
NEW YORK—The Ace Hotel in New York was crawling with pajama-clad revelers last night, there to celebrate the launch of artist Will Cotton’s limited-edition pastry-printed pajamas for Creative Time. The swanky lobby bar area was filled with confections — meringue, marshmallows, cupcakes, brightly-colored macaroons, cookies, cakes, and chandeliers with candy necklaces dangling from them, all the subjects of artist Cotton’s monumental, 18th-century-European-style textural candy landscapes and portraits — while savories from the neighboring restaurant Breslin were being passed to those with less of a sweet tooth.

While enjoying a macaroon (or three) around the confectionery table, we ran into artist Christian Holstad with Simon Castets from V magazine, and brushed past Terence Koh, collectors Shelly and Phil Aarons, boutique owner Humberto Leon, P.S.1 director Klaus Biesenbach, Cecelia Dean, Kyle and Carl DeWoody, Lisa Anastos, Kalup Linzy, Vito Schnabel, and CT’s own Anne Pasternak on the way to getting a tarot card reading from Jacob Ireland.

The Creative Time party was produced and publicized by the PR company Company Agenda (founded by Gina Nanni, Mrs. Glenn O'Brien), who had all the servers wearing the pajama tops and adorned with various sweets on their heads (cupcakes, two-tier cakes — hats apparently made by Cotton for the event). Later on, a live performance by Patrick Cleandenim and a DJ set by Matt Creed had party-goers shuffling downstairs to take the slumber party into the wee hours of the night.

The Will Cotton PJs are in an edition of 1,000 and will be available on the Creative Time Web site just in time for Valentine's Day ($150 preview price; $350, signed by the artist).

Side note: The pastry-art love affair continues through this weekend at the New York City ad agency/creative consultancy/gallery-boutique Partners & Spade, where Will Cotton has a residency running through Sunday, Nov. 22. The artist is baking and frosting various confectionaries that will serve as models for an upcoming series of paintings.
