The Whitney Museum of American Art announced the artists to be included in its 2010 Whitney Biennial today, and the list is a lot shorter than for editions past.
While 2008's show presented 81 artists (and spread beyond the confines of the Whitney into the nearby Park Avenue Armory), and the 2006 edition included 100, this year's will feature 55, and each will show only one work.
Put together by Italian independent curator Francesco Bonami and Whitney senior curatorial assistant Gary Carrion-Murayari, the exhibition will include artists ranging from the emerging — Kate Gilmore (b. 1975), Tam Tran (b. 1986), Aurel Schmidt (1982) — to the established — Michael Asher (b. 1943), Lorraine O'Grady (b. 1934), R.H. Quaytman (b. 1961).
Their practices range from film and video to photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, and architecture, and performances and events will also take place at the museum throughout the biennial, which runs Feb. 25 to May 30, 2010.
“The Whitney Biennial continues to reflect the way in which art is shaped by the particular historical moment in which it was created," reads a statement from the curators. "The artists selected for this year’s exhibition reflect diverse responses to the anxiety and optimism of the past two years. 2010 does not privilege any one medium or aesthetic style, but rather assembles a wide range of individual gestures, personal histories, and improvised encounters that speak to a sense of openness and community."
