Workers from Canada's Museum of Civilization have been on strike for 85 days.

OTTAWA—While strikes at Paris museums this month have made international headlines, 420 museum workers from the Canadian War Museum and Canadian Museum of Civilization have been on strike for 85 days, protesting a lack of job security and the contracting out of services at their institutions.

Though negotiators have refused to provide details of the talks, both sides have released statements in recent days stating that they believe a resolution is possible before Christmas. On Friday, the corporation that runs the museums stated that it is “hopeful that this strike will end soon — perhaps as early as Monday. This would make possible a paycheque for employees on Dec. 23.”

John Gordon, the workers’ union president, told press that while the strike was directly tied to job concerns, the union also hoped to draw attention to “cuts that have been happening [that are] are destroying culture and the arts” across Canada.
