United States Artists Names 10 Visual Arts Fellows

Published: December 14, 2009
LOS ANGELES—At a ceremony this evening, United States Artists (USA) announced the 10 visual arts recipients of its annual grants. The winners, who will each take home $50,000 are as follows: Dario Robleto, Diana Al-Hadid, Terry Allen, Anthony Hernandez, Vija Celmins, Kim Jones, Joan Jonas, Martin Mazorra and Mike Houston, Dave McKenzie, and Judy Pfaff. Those winners join 40 artists who received awards in other disciplines at the dinner celebration.

USA, which also supports arts advocacy programs, initiated the grant process in 2006 and awards 50 grants each year. According to survey conducted from the initial grant winners, 83 percent use the funds to develop a new project, while 62 percent use the cash infusion to purchase art supplies.

Officials at USA say that they hope their programs will increase Americans’ respect for artists. As their Web site notes, 96 percent of Americans say they value art but only 27 percent say that they value actual artists.
