While art crime may be running rampant in the south of France, where a choice Degas was purloined recently, investigators at least have one bit of news to celebrate: Claude Monets Beach in Pourville, which was stolen from a museum in Western Poland, has been recovered by Polish police.
A 41-year-old man, as yet unidentified, has been arrested, and a spokesperson for the police says that he has confessed to the theft. The painting recovered at the time of the man’s arrest was brought to the National Museum in Poznan, Poland, where experts are set to ensure its authenticity.
The painting originally went missing nearly 10 years ago, when it was sliced from its frame and replaced with a copy that had been painted on cardboard. Its value is said to be more than a million dollars, though owner Aleksandra Sobocinska notes the sentimental value that her family also attached to the painting, telling reporters that “to us it was a priceless masterpiece.”
