The donation, by James and Frances McGlothlin, includes American art from the 19th and 20th century, with oil paintings, watercolors, and sculptures by Cassat, Homer, Sargent, Whistler, and more. The art is worth $70 million. The collection is considered "one of the most important American art collections still in private hands," according to Michael Brand, director of the museum. "This gift will have a major impact on the museum," Brand said. "In terms of the art, this will transform our American collection." FOR FULL STORY SEE: Washington Post: "$100 Million Gift Boosts Va.
