Blue-blooded London dealer and bon vivant Henry Allsopp has joined Phillips de Pury's London office as a senior contemporary specialist for the evening sales. The proprietor of Allsopp Contemporary gallery and son of former Christie's chairman Lord Hindlip — who resigned in the wake of the price-fixing scandal — Allsopp has plenty of cred despite being a baron-in-waiting. Having cut his teeth at his father's showroom, the dealer spent the second half of the 90s at Jay Jopling's White Cube during the peak of the YBA boom, that is — and has provided early support for such London avant-gardists as Martin Creed. A Phillips spokesperson confirmed that Allsopp joined the auction house a few weeks ago, and said she was unsure what the new hire planned to do with his gallery going forward. Attempts to reach Allsopp Contemporary were unsuccessful, as the phone line appears to have been disconnected.
