Raymond Pettibon, the California–based artist whose drawings have graced both record covers for hardcore music group Black Flag and the walls of New York’s most discerning galleries, has won the University of Viennas Oscar KokoschkaPrize for 2010. Pettibon will accept the award and a €20,000 ($28,000) check on at the university March 1.
Established by the Austrian government in 1980, following the painter’s death, the Kokoschka Prize is awarded to a contemporary artist every two years.
Raymond Pettibon, now 52, is no stranger to spotlight. He won the Whitney Museum of American Arts Bucksbaum Award in 2004, which earned him $100,000 and a show at the museum. Interestingly, the artist’s real name is Raymond Ginn. According to interviews with him, he adopted his current name only after President Reagan’s election made his nickname — Ray Ginn (Reagan) — a bit unfortunate.
