Among New York's most avid collectors of contemporary art, Susan and Michael Hort have also been devoted boosters of the Armory Show for many years, hosting a well-attended annual brunch during the fair week of the fair in their spacious TriBeCa home to show off some of their more recent acquisitions — a sampling that this year was installed by curator Simon Watson. ARTINFO made the rounds of the Armory Show with the Horts on opening day, and Michael Hort told us what he liked, and what he ended up buying.

The fair is excellent this year, excellent. The artists gave good stuff to the galleries, and the galleries are displaying it well. I think this is the best fair in a couple years, anywhere in the world. The quality is amazing. The people who came to New York for it are having a good time visiting the galleries and private collections. It all feels very positive.
One of the nice things about this fair is that, while other fairs have strict rules and regulations about who can and can't get in, this one has let in a lot of very young galleries that are doing a great job. Rental, for instance, from the Lower East Side. It's important to have young gallerists here because they want to be here, in this context, so they're excited and working hard to make a great presentation, bringing the best from their artists. My only complaint is that the food at the fair stinks.
As for what we liked, we saw a great Serban Savu painting at Mihai Nicodim, and a great painting by Paul P at Daniel Reich. Eigen + Art's booth, with the solo show of David Schnell, is fabulous. We wanted to get some pieces by Jakub Julian Ziolkowski from Hauser & Wirth, but they were already sold. We bought an Eric von Lieshout painting from Ursula Krinzinger, and a Savu painting from Galerie Hussenot.
