Jean Nouvel's ferocious building streak continues with the announcement that the French architect will design the Serpentine Gallerys 2010 summer pavilion, the temporary cultural oasis it annually installs on Hyde Park Lawn. Last year, Japanese architectural duo SANAA designed the popular open-air structure, attracting 250,000 during its three-month run from mid July to mid October.
Nouvel's design, which resembles a cross between an angular Mark di Suvero sculpture and the open-air boxes that made Liam Gillick famous, will feature a retractable roof and be made of glass, polycarbonate, and fabric. Christian Boltanski, who has been tapped to represent France in the 2011 Venice Biennale, will also create a special installation for the structure.
Serpentine directors Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist declared in a written statement, “It is an honour to bring Nouvel’s globally acclaimed work to London for everyone to enjoy.” Despite a string of buildings throughout Europe and the United States, Nouvel has no completed projects in the English capital.
Previous buildings by Nouvel include the 2003 lipstick–shaped office building Torre Aigües de Barcelona, a major 2005 expansion to Madrid's Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the blue-and-gold Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis that was completed in 2006.
