Art dealer Gavin Brown has announced he will more than double the size of his West Village gallery by expanding into what is now a meatpacking plant run by renowned butcher Pat LaFrieda, at 601 Washington Street, according to Crain’s New York Business.
The first artist to grace the space will be Jonathan Horowitz, whose new works are said to explore vegetarianism and sustainability. The show’s title? “Go Vegan!” An opening date has not yet been set.
LaFrieda, who New York dubbed a "meat magician" in a profile this week, is set to open a new 10,000-square-foot processing facility in North Bergen, N.J., next month, though he says that he plans to maintain a small office and cutting room in the current plant. LaFrieda — who has been Brown's landlord at his Greenwich Street gallery for years — reportedly put the building on the market last year for $31 million but decided to lease it after failing to find a buyer.
This is not the first time that LaFrieda has crossed paths with the worlds of art and entertainment. He has long been the beef supplier for restaurateur Danny Meyers Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, which hosts contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. (Antony Gormleys "Event Horizon" exhibition opened there last Friday, and Meyer, for his part, is currently providing food at the Whitney.)
LaFrieda also supplies the meat for the celebrated burgers at the West Village's Minetta Tavern and the Spotted Pig, only a few blocks from Brown’s gallery, where rapper and businessman Jay-Z is a partial investor.
