This week, let’s talk about some winners and losers.

1. Loser! Tatiana Kahn, you’re a Los Angeles art dealer who just agreed to pleadguilty on charges that you sold a fake Picasso pastel for $2 million. Butthat isn’t the part that puts your sordid tale in the loser category. What makes it a loser isthat it’s just so, well, weird and lame. So, okay, basically, you told somepoor artist that a real Picasso had been stolen from one of your fancycollector clients and so you needed an exact copy to, as the Los Angeles Times putit, “play a trick that would help catch the thief”? Right. We need somebetter art-world swindling stories, stat. Because this one is just sad.

2. A draw. Cities and their street art — some get it right, and some get itvery wrong. Um, New York? Nice Shepard Fairey mural on Houston Street! That’s a very thoughtful send-off for Jeffrey Deitch. Um, Melbourne? Mightwant to be careful when you hire cleaners to scrub the streets of graffiti. You wouldn’t want them to, like, paint over a Banksy stencil worth thousandsof dollars or anything.

3. Winner! MCA Chicago, you’ve got some fancy new strategies in the works. Yourappointment of Michael Darling as new chief curator smacked of progressivismin so many ways. First of all, the guy is going to attract a whole newaudience. Just think: his upcoming show at the Seattle Art Museum, where he is currentlycurator, pairs Kurt Cobain and Andy Warhol. That totally smells like teenspirit — at least if you add, like, maybe 20 or so years to the teen inquestion. Also, your press office announced the news of Darling’sappointment to the media on Twitter, precisely the sort of formatyour exciting new audience is into. That is just so zeitgeisty, MCA, whatwith David Hockney now drawing on an iPad and all. Go, new crowd of Gen-Xmuseum visitors! Go, new media!

4. Winner! Still no word from the judge on the David Zwirner/Craig Robins“blacklist” case, as regards that preliminary injunction Robins is trying tobring to keep Zwirner from selling Marlene Dumas paintings on which Robinsbelieves he has legal claims. (Whew! Got that straight?) And that’s finewith this news organization, because the story we broke last week on dealerJack Tiltons testimony is still relevant, and still getting lotsof hits.

5. Loser! Carlson & Co., you’re an art fabricator famous for making Jeff Koonsgiant stainless steel sculpture Balloon Dog... and you’re closing, because ofthe economy? What? Now how will artists make big shiny things?
