The Aga Khan Award for Architecture has announced this year's finalists, and among the 19 members on the list are two Chinese architects, who respectively designed the Fujian Bridge School project and the Guangzhou “Tulou” (a large, enclosed, circular residential building).
The award ceremony will be held in October at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Included among the nine jurors selecting this year's winner are internationally acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel and Yu Kongjian, a professor of landscape design at Peking University. Yu is the first Chinese invited to sit on jury.
The award was established by Aga Khan IV in 1977 and is presented every three years. Over the past 30 years, organizers of the prize have cited more than 100 important architectural projects for their functionality and adaptability. The scale of past winners has also range from small public squares to massive city-planning projects.
