Barbara Kruger is not usually the first artist that ARTINFO thinks of when planning décor for a party, but it seemed to work quite well for East Hampton’s Guild Hall, which used the artist’s trademark colors — black, white, and red — to decorate the siteof its annual gala last weekend. There were black cloths on every table, black-and-white napkins on the lap of every attendee, and red gift bags hanging on each chair.
Seeing the veteran artist and notoriously savage critic of rampant consumerism fêted at a plush gala in one of America’s wealthiest and most exclusive vacation enclaves is a strange sight, though not an altogetherunpleasant one — particularly since the upper crust of the Hamptons cameout en masse to support the scrappy arts center.
Alec Baldwin, a devoted Guild Hall supporter, was on hand in a rich blue blazer, looking delightfully chipper, as was model Courtney Hejl. Philips de Pury director Alexander Gilkes was floating through in his customary haberdasheral finery, girlfriendMisha Nonoo on his arm and bold blue pants on his legs, continuing to show off the sartorial splendor that ARTINFO’s Emma Allen investigated earlier this year. Guests, unfortunately, appeared to have missed the Kruger-color memo, opting forthe lightest of pastels: Dina DeLuca Chartouni alighted on the scene in a one-strap gown the color of an egg yolk whipped with cream, while real-estate master Edward Pantzer opted for attire of faint peach.
Kruger, at least, was on message, wearing an understated black sweaterover a white shirt and black pants. But where was her red? On the spotless shoes adorning the feet of businessman and Guild Hall supporter Don Mullen, it turned out.
